Chilson Earthmoving’s History

Read about the three generations of Chilson Earthmoving in the Fort Morgan Times!

Rob Chilson has extensive earthmoving knowledge that was passed down from his father, who began giving Rob lessons at the age of 14. As an adult, Rob was a sole proprietor for many years before incorporating his company, Chilson Excavating, in 1993. In 2014 the name was changed to Chilson Earthmoving to better reflect the diverse scope of work that the company does.

All along the way the company has grown steadily, building both their capacity and their reputation as a first rate earthmoving business.

When Rob was 14, he began work with his father at the family business, Gopher Land Leveling. He worked with his father all throughout high school, up until he married Brandi in 1989. In 1991, Rob started his own business with his wife Brandi as bookkeeper. During the early years, he built his business starting with  a 10 yard capacity scraper and backhoe, and moving to several 23 yard capacity scrapers, an excavator and a Bobcat. After several years of business, the name became Chilson Excavating, Inc, with work mainly on the front range, from Castle Rock to Fort Collins. They developed parks and recreational areas, including many miles of walking and biking trails, ponds, and sports complexes. In order to complete the larger works, Rob subcontracted with his father, who still ran his own business at the time.

After a few years, Rob’s two oldest sons came to work for him and all three generations of Chilsons worked side by side to complete a downtown Fort Morgan improvement project. The next years brought more joint ventures to the family, including plenty of work on dairies and feedlots in the surrounding Colorado area. The largest joint-family job to date was a 6,000 head dairy with approximately 2 million yards of dirt moved.

In 2014, the Chilsons renamed their business to better reflect the diverse nature of the jobs they completed. Their excavating label seemed to say that it was the only thing the company could do, so they changed to Chilson Earthmoving in 2014, to encompass not only excavation but also the diverse world of earthmoving. Soon after the name change, Rob’s youngest son joined the operation, completing the full spread of the family enterprise.

In 2016, Grandpa Bob, having successfully run his company Gopher Land Levelling for almost 60 years, decided to retire. Grandpa Bob has spent many years grooming generations of Chilsons for their land-moving business, and he is still frequently consulted for jobs. He is a constant source of support, and an occasional operator when his equipment is needed.
